Balayage vs. Highlights: Which Is Right for You?

By Alishia Fite··5 min read

It's the question I hear most at the color bar: should I do balayage or highlights? They both add lightness, so people use the words interchangeably — but they're different techniques that grow out in completely different ways. Here's how I help clients decide.

The short version

Highlights are painted onto sections of hair and wrapped in foil, which gives crisp, saturated brightness. Balayage is hand-painted freehand, with no foil, for a softer, more blended result. The biggest practical difference isn't the day you leave — it's three months later.

What balayage actually is

Balayage is a French word that means 'to sweep,' and that's exactly the motion. We paint lightener onto the surface of the hair by hand, feathering it so there's no hard starting line. As your hair grows, there's no obvious regrowth band to chase, which is why balayage is the lower-maintenance choice — most clients stretch it to three or four months.

It's ideal if you want sun-kissed dimension, a natural grow-out, and fewer trips to the salon.

What highlights actually are

Highlights are woven and saturated root-to-tip inside foils, which lets us get brighter and more uniform — especially around the face or for an all-over lift. The trade-off is upkeep: because the color goes right to the root, regrowth shows sooner, so foils usually want a touch-up every six to ten weeks.

Highlights are the right call when you want maximum brightness, crisp definition, or a cooler, more polished blonde.

How to choose

Ask yourself three questions: How often do you realistically want to be in the chair? How bright do you want to go? And how do you feel about visible regrowth? If you want low-maintenance and natural, balayage. If you want bright and defined and don't mind more frequent visits, highlights.

And it's not either/or — plenty of clients alternate, or combine a partial highlight with hand-painted pieces. A gloss every few weeks keeps either one from going brassy. When you book, we'll look at your hair and your routine together and make the call.
